ChilkatVFP 1.50 Released Last Week

Folks, Sorry for the late notice, had a total knee replacement done two days after the release... Chilkat Version 11 exclusively uses the Chilkat.<class> COM call. Prior versions could use Chilkat_9_5_0.<class> for the COM call. Introduced the ChilkatVFP.H header file to handle this situation. If you use Chilkat v11 or greater, open the ChilkatVFP.H, set the CHILKAT_VERSION_11.0.0_OR_GREATER variable to .T., then recompile ChilkatVFP.VCX. If you support multiple Chilkat versions, set appropriately. Note: *Your* registry may not need it (depends on what's in your registry) but the intended runtime machine will most likely need it. And be sure to include the compiled ChilkatVFP.VCX/VCT to the runtime machine. A big release. Some older classes were removed, all the undocumented PEMs were removed, documented PEMs were removed and replaced by new functions. Many other functions marked as decremented for later removal. So, the list of items done for this release: 1) Added ChilkatVFP.H with compile-time switch. See Documentation/History.md for details. 2) Compatibility with Chilkat version 11.0.0. 3) Added code to test for removed classes/properties/methods. Claude AI to the RESCUE!

So, earlier this week I got a request to produce a report(or more specifically an Excel file) - for someone here at work to review a whole bunch of Work Orders/Jobs - based upon the criteria of parts being manufactured had a particular process completed and the processing occurred on or after a day in August of last year. Suffice it to say - the database systems are VERY Complicated here - and there are actually 2 huge systems - that also have a lot of interactions between them. And, all the data relations are ALSO Very complicated. The deal is, each part being manufactured has a Routing process, where the part is routed to different areas in the manufacturing facility here, to have different processes completed to create the final part. And, there is a Routing report that is printed. So, I was pointed to a VFP program that was used to print the Routing report, a program that was updated to allow the program code to run independently, outside of the whole system/project. So, the idea was to review the program - and create a new program to gather up the data being requested. But, again - even that program is a bit rough to go thru, and may not have all the pieces. I was struggling a bit to try and get this done, and yet I knew it had to be done quickly. Well, yesterday morning on the way to work I came up with the game plan. The obvious answer was to have Claude create the program. So, I gave it the reporting program, as well as the criteria - and after resolving some of the hallucinations - I WAS Able to get a viable program running and produce the needed Excel files!!! Which I was really thrilled about. Now, just to give folks an idea of some of the hallucinations from Claude, I will include some of them here. My Fav one is that Claude created a Cursor, then later in the code it did a Seek on the Cursor - but, the cursor had NO Index! Then, another one was in the Summary message it was printing to the screen. At one point it had this: ? "="*60 Which is simply not valid. And, yet, a couple lines down it did it correctly with this line: ? REPLICATE("-", 80) I find it Ironic that it would do an incorrect AND a correct version of similar code in the same program. Just kind of weird. Also, there was code involved in regards to building this kind of Job#. In the reporting program there were actually TWO Chunks of code related to building the Job# - but, in the program produced by Claude - he failed to implement the one chunk. I told Claude about this, and said it was related to a specific variable being used - then he correctly rectified the problem. So, all in all - it was a Fantastic Success. And, the idea of giving a Difficult problem to Claude and let him take a Whack at it - turned out to be a good decision. Anyway... Code Ref Tool is Broken...

Hello there Fellow Pro-Foxers! Happy Monday! I hope you all had a good weekend. So, I've been having this REALLY Weird problem!!! I was recently trying to run the Code References Tool - but, something Odd happened. As in - Nothing happened! And, I tried it a bunch of times. Now, at the time - I had this particular project opened on my screen - and I wanted to obviously search it. But, it was a No Go. Then, last week I tried it again - but, I was in a different session of VFP, and I was trying to do a search on a Different project. When an odd thing happened - I got a warning saying this other project was already opened. And, indeed that project was opened in another session of VFP. I was like - WTF - that makes no sense! So, I went into that other session of VFP, closed down that project - and SURE Enough - when I tried to open the Code References Tool - instead, it literally just opened up this one project. It just didn't seem to make sense. So, last week I was looking into this problem - searched the issue on the web - closest I got was a response by Tamara suggesting that this person recompile the FoxRef project. This was the link to the person reporting the problem: https://www.tek-tips.com/threads/vfp9-code-references-problem.1639205/ I actually DID try and recompile the FoxRef project, but - it turns out I got an error where it could not properly read one of the forms. Even when I tried to directly open the Form - I could not open the file. But, I figured I would try something - and, I WAS Indeed able to actually Run the FoxRef App - and I WAS able to actually do searches. However, it's weird that I have run the App directly instead of from the menu system. I was just looking around A LOT in the VFP Help - but, can't seem to easily figure out how I can see if a menu system somehow got corrupted. Which seems it Must be the case. I even looked around to see if maybe the FoxPro config file got corrupted - but, I already found out there is NO Config in use. So, if anyone can give me a pointer on how to fix this problem - that would be awesome! -Kurt

Hi all, It's been awhile since I've been on here. Realizing that VFP grids have Column objects but not row objects has anyone developed a grid that allows us to move rows using ole drag and drop ? I know a list box can do it. I need more dynamic font colors and background colors in the grid to help my customer decide what needs to be re-arranged up and down. The list box doesn't have the dynamic column or cell colors as far as I know. Thank you, Philip B Vicksburg, MI

Hello there Oh Mighty ProFox Hive Mind! As many of you know - I've been doing a lot of digging in to AI recently - to use it as a Tool for FoxPro system conversion. We are now at the point of looking at weather to use an Online AI tool (like Claude or CoPilot) vs. using a Local LLM (like Ollama and loading it with an AI Model). So, today - for the Hell of it - I put a question to the M$ CoPilot, essentially asking AI which AI option is the Best to use - for doing a conversion - using this prompt: What are the best AI options to use for trying to convert older Visual FoxPro code to a WPF based C#/.Net platform, in order to automate as much as possible the conversion of a FoxPro based system?? Honestly - I was Very Surprised by it's answer: For automating the conversion of Visual FoxPro code to a WPF-based C#/.NET platform, you might consider tools like FmPro Migrator. It offers a Code Conversion Workbench that supports automated conversion of Visual FoxPro PRG files and form code into C#. This tool allows you to manage the conversion process efficiently, customize machine learning prompts, and even train AI models to improve the quality of the converted code. Additionally, it integrates with tools like GitHub Copilot X and Visual Studio IntelliCode to refine the output further. Further Down the AI Rabbit Hole...

So - I wanted to take a few moments to give folks an update on my progress with using AI - as it all is directly related to FoxPro. My initial trials were all with CoPilot on the M$ main search page in my Browser. That is where I was first trying out having AI generate FoxPro code for me. Of course, once I realized it could GIVE me VFP code - it stood to reason - it should understand VFP code and thus turn around and allow me to feed it VPF code and return back C# code to me. I did some attempts at that with some VERY basic screen designs of my own - and I had success. But, as RK had pointed out, it would not be a great idea to upload co. Code to the web for doing code conversions - which I completely agreed with. As such, I started a deep dive into exploring the usage of an AI engine installed locally on my machine. In this case, it's Ollama - the engine produced by Meta. And, after you install the engine - you then need to load an actual AI model. For those of you who are Fearless and want to dive into local AI engine usage... First, you need to DL the main Ollama engine (I'm using it on Windows): https://ollama.com/download Then, from something like PowerShell - you will run Ollama - but, you will need to call it with a specific AI Model (as well as Model size). So, at Powershell prompt - you would do (as an example): ollama run codellama:34b FYI - the Model sizes you can run are specifically based upon Memory size of your computer. There are a ton of Models. For instance, you can filter by model type, like those for coding: https://ollama.com/search?q=code But - here's w/o filtering - to show you all the models: https://ollama.com/search Now, in my case - I was trying the Codellama and also Deepseek-Coder-V2. But, I hate to say it - it was all painfully frustrating. Neither one of them was able to actually produce C# code based upon a FoxPro screen. I did also try LLama3.1 - the 8b version - and I was able to get some C# code output based upon FoxPro input. But, It was not completely viable C#. Then, someone here - a fellow ProFoxer - he suggested Claude.ai. In particular, he actually pointed me to Claude Code - which can run locally. In fact, if you look at the following webpage and play the video - I think the power behind Claude Code is WILD: https://www.anthropic.com/solutions/coding But, I found I could not try Claude Code for free. So, I opted for trying Claude - the web version - for free. And, I had some great success. Problem was, once I gave it a more complicated screen - I was hitting the limits of what Claude allowed me to do with the free access. So, yeah - I decided to Bite the Bullet - and go ahead and create a paid account for $20 for one month. I figured, in my case - it would be worth it. Turns out it WAS worth it - and I have been fruitful at giving it FoxPro screens and getting back WPF based C#/.Net code. As such - now the REAL Fun begins! As a side note, I was speaking to a programmer buddy of mine back in NYC this past weekend. He has Also used a bit of AI as a tool for his work. But, he fears that AI could potentially take his job away. I told him - he's wrong about that - and, instead - there's a Better way to look at things. That is - to USE AI - to understand it and implement it - and it will end up making HIM more efficient at work. So, instead of Fearing AI - one should Harness AI to their own advantage!!!
