[NF] Two DHCP servers on a network - Changed to [NF]

Hi I have test platform network running server 2012, the PCs are cat cabled back to the network switch. All the PCs connect to the domain. I also have several wifi devices (laptops/tablets/smartphones) which connect the internet but not the server or domain. The Virgin Media router also has DHCP. The router is fixed to 192.168.1.1 The server is fixed to 192.168.1.2 I've also set the ranges for DHCP so the server has 192.168.1.10 to 192.168.1.230 The router has the range 192.168.1.239 and above. My thinking was if anything logs into the domain it will take the server DHCP IP address range and wifi devices from the router DHCP IP range. Having checked all the connected devices they all seem to be 239 and above. It appears it is a bad idea to have 2 DHCP servers but not sure if this will stop the tablets and smartphones getting a connection. Could anyone point me towards best practices please. Running through sprocs made 5+ years ago to identify what tables I need to link for emergency queries. This one former employee left a few of these. -- Does something and not sure how Of course this is within a 4 deep subselect that gens a joining table later on. I have already seen some of this miscommunication in it. My value is as a translation layer between the owner (non-techie) and the techies. Unfortunately, I do not know the area that well yet and the company is small, so I am still a techie and am having to learn and get results quickly. If I live, I will be invincible! You never know which DHCP server will respond. Both will. The question is which will respond first. Apparently, one of OP's DHCP servers is faster than the other (at providing DHCP responses), and that is why all of the assigned host IP addresses are in its range. (Presumably, once the enquiring host gets a response, it will configure according to that and ignore the other response.) Sincerely, Gene Wirchenko

Ted, I absolutely agree with about 90% of what you're saying. It's a real problem for me as well, trying to get people to nail down enough specifics about whatever problem they're reporting to enable me to reproduce it and fix it. I also deeply appreciate all the help you've given me over the years. My 10% is: I really, really dislike it when people tell me, as a consumer of computer-related stuff, that "You don't really want to do that. What you really need is...." No, I know what I really want and really need. I'm the guy with the money, and I'm the guy who makes the decisions. The fact that some computer geek decided, in their vast wisdom, that something that used to work just fine should no longer be available to me, or that something that used to be simple and self-contained should now be complex and require more steps, or that some feature that I relied on but they don't understand isn't "important" enough to retain, because they are trying to "protect" me or whatever else, doesn't impress me at all. Do they still do that? There's at least one guy here who definitely deserves that, given his tireless service to the community (and this list) over the years.
