Hey there Folks,
I'm back again - now working at the new job at Pako here in OH.
Was here several days - head back down DEEP in the VFP world (Nothing - and I mean NOTHING Runs Like the Fox!) - and suddenly yesterday I got a bad issue. I've never seen the issue before. It's actually stopping me from running the system on my local C: drive dev environment - which I WAS Able to do up until yesterday afternoon.
I'm really Stumped on this one. I did research on the web, and then searching the ProFox Archives. But, it seems ALL References to a problem with a Backlink Error and resolutions here on ProFox (and even on other Web searches) was in regards to DBC & DBF files - and NOT with regards to Project and Form files!
The error spit out by the system is as such: An Unexpected Program Error has Occurred... x Error number: 0 Error message: Error loading file - record number 6. LOGIN <or one of its members>. Loading form or the data environment : Cannot resolve backlink Line number of error: 116 ‘Command with error: DO FORM common\forms\Logon2.scx Program with error: START
I've tried SO Many things. Pulling the Logon2 screen back out, deleting from Disk, then dropping another copy into same location, Rebuilding Project file, and even doing the Recompile All Files in the Build Options - but, Nothing seems to work!
So, I'm really Stuck. And, Of course, I surely do NOT want to be running the Live system, as I don't want to be touching Live data - thus why everything is copied down to my C: Drive.
Will also note, I can double click on that Logon screen within the project - and even edit the screen. But, upon trying to compile and run the system - that's when things go Totally FUBAR!
Ugh...
Any help would be Greatly appreciated.

Try building the project with the recompile option. You should get an ERR file that might point you at whatever DBF-style thing is complaining. Also, if you do have any DBCs, run VALIDATE DATABASE on each one and see what that tells you.

Hey RK - thanks for the quick reply.
I did indeed already do "building the project with the recompile option" - and I got One error. But, it was a completely different screen - and not the Logon2 screen, which appear in Backlink error message.
Also, Although we use a DBC - that DBC is not actually included in the Data section of the project. But, I will attempt to do a Validate on the Database and see what happens.

RK - just to follow up to your suggestion. I did resolve that one compile issue (a date field problem on another screen) - and did a full recompile.
It's a No Go - Error is still occurring...

*DO FORM common\forms\Logon2.scx *<<
Open up the Login form as a DBF NOUPDATE and go to record 6. Check the ClassLoc memo field or the Methods memo field or even the Reserved8 memo field (that holds the .H file if it exists). That'll take care of 98 percent of the issues. If you can't find it, check the other memo fields - it could be an OLE control or something like that.
Once you locate it, back it up, take off the NOUPDATE clause, edit directly in the DBF, save, compile the form and you're now unblocked.

Bill’s advice seems more direct but you can also try issuing FREE TABLE <form.scx>.

RK - I just tried the FREE TABLE <form.scx> thing - and VFP stated "... is not part of a Database."
I kinda figured that was not an option - since a Table must be part of a DBF in order to Set it Free!
Heck - at this point - I'm trying anything. I even compiled an EXE in the Live system area - copied that EXE over to my C: drive testing area - ran it - and get the Same Backlink error.
I'm pulling my hair out on this - and I don't have any hair left to pull out!

Is the backlink error coming from the VALI DATA? If so, open that DBC EXCUSIVE, run VALIDATE DATABSE <dbcname> RECOVER. That should repair the DBC itself. PACK it when you're done. Make backups before you start. : - )

No - error is not coming from a DBC.
I spent this afternoon working with my networking guy - trying to figure it out. Like if I'm missing files or something is corrupted. HE Also has a local copy of the system on his C: drive. He copied the EXE I created that's on the server, the same EXE I've been trying to run - and it works on HIS PC locally - but, not on mine. At this point - he has suggested I just copy down the whole system again from the Server to my PC - which I am doing right now. It's going to take an hour to copy the files. So - I'm going to leave it and let it run overnight. Then come back Mon. Morning and try testing things again!
So - yeah - I'm heading out of here shortly...

Hmmm... I guess I really don't understand exactly how/where the backlink message is coming from.
All VFP things are DBFs under the hood, right. So it is possible to accidentally add a FRX/LBX/SCX/VCX to a DBC and as Bill noted this creates some metadata in the table which indicates it's in a DBC. OTOH this could be a misleading error and it's a permission/environmental issue as Richard Q suggested. Computers! Always so much fun...

Yeah - I spent HOURS today with the IT guy on my team who does networking & IT support - he's NOT one of the Developers - but, he HAS a Dev background. And, we were struggling to try SO Many things. Even trying some installs/updates from the VFP CD ROM they have. Still to no avail...
In my original posting - Backlink claims to be tied to a Screen and Not a DBF - which is SO WEIRD!
I agree - maybe it's Misleading - and truth is NOT what it points to! And, yeah - computers - always so much fun! Even what Richard Q. suggested - I showed that Specifically to my IT guy - as that is His Territory. He was like - Nope - that's not it.
Gotta say - starting a new job - and at the end of the 1st full week - stumbling upon such a STRANGE Issue - it's not only Perplexing - Butt Hella Frustrating!
I will say - and this is VERY Interesting and IRONIC! In searching the ProFox Archives - I found the 1st person who complained of a Backlink issue! Ironically - it's my manager at this job - who posted the job - Wayne. Although, in His case (back in like 2000) - it was indeed tied to Data and DBF files...
Have a GREAT Weekend Folks!!!

Bill's advice seems more direct but you can also try issuing FREE TABLE <form.scx>.

An SCX is a DBF (table). As is a VCX/FRX/LBX/MNX. So is a DBC but that's getting a bit meta...
The other vague memory I have of something like this is a corrupted SCX. If you have backups or source control perhaps an earlier version of the SCX can be restored.

You're wrong (sorry). That's not a problem of the Logon form, but from the table the form is trying to open. The error message tells it clearly: "Error loading file" in SCX record 6.
USE Login.SCX GO 6 BROWS
Or look at the dataenvironment of that SCX in your form editor.
That table has the backlink error. The table is definitely part of a database (DBC). But since you don't have the backlinked DBC in your project (and therefor not in the expected folder), that dbf cannot get opened.
Solution: Get the missing DBC files, add it to the project. Then OPEN DATABASE <YourData.dbc> VALI DATA RECO

Juergen,
That sounds entirely reasonable, only I haven't seen the DE as record # 6. Maybe it's a DE cursor at record 6 with a bad path.
*Still* I would totally open up the Login form as a DBF NOUPDATE and take a look. I'd be entirely happy to be wrong.
Hey Kurt - to spell it out for you...I never wrote to look at the DBC. Open the form as a table.
USE <hard coded path to logon2 form>/Logon2.SCX SHARED NOUPDATE GOTO 6
The DE is in the Properties memo field if used. Check the ClassLoc memo field or the Methods memo field or even the Reserved8 memo. If you see *any* relative pathing, take note of it. I assume you'll make a backup....Now open the SCX as a table but leave off the NOUPDATE clause. Hard code the direct path(s). Close the table, recompile the form.
Can you open/run the form? If so, great! If not, check the changes.
Assuming you can get it working, now you want to change the hard coded path(s) to a correct relative path(s), if relevant. Actually, one of your relative paths in your example looked funny to me. How is it done? Basically rinse and repeat. One step at a time.
If none of this works, still open the form as a table and go to record 6 NOUPDATE. Set the memo field to a monospaced font. Go into all the memo fields, click in the memo field, then select Ctrl + A. Do you see a hidden character that you don't see in other records? It's conceivable there's a rogue character in one of the memo fields.
Otherwise, just send it to me, we'll talk and I'll figure it out.

I sure hate it when I end up attempting to communicate in Alein Speak...
Hopefully this comes across correctly now.
Hey Guys - thanks for ALL the Input on this!!!
I really appreciated it.
And, yeah - there's a DE for the form - and I see DBF's in it.
So, this morning - things are now working. My IT guy on Friday suggested that we try a Brutt Force method to resolve the issues. And, that process was completed by the time I got here this morning. So - I tried running the EXE - and it Works!
The Method? Copy the entire folder of the system from the server down to my C: drive again. And, yup - that fixed the issue!
And, now that I think back - I think I now know What actually caused the problem.
The DBF file with all the users & PW's - I copied that over from the server - when I was testing new changes to the data login data, as we are trying to implement some simple encryption on the stored passwords. And, as I was playing around with it locally - I think I recopied Just that DBF - and I think it what caused the initial problem - since it's supposed to be tied to the DBC.
At least that is my guess...
Anyway - time to move forwards and get back to cranking on The Fox!

Kurt,
In differing opinions between Juergen and I occur again on this forum, here's the hard and fast rule.
What he said.
I say this with all due respect - Woody has probably forgotten more about VFP than I'll ever know. :)
