Hi All
I have read through previous posts on this subject, but the more I read the more confused I get as to what advice I should be following.
We have a situation where speed issues are affecting a VFP application. The data is held on a Server 2012 server. Previously we have be told to disable SMB2 etc, but it seems now that this shouldn't be an issue.
I have now found mentions of a SMB2 registry setting along the lines of the OPLOCKS thing years ago. This setting is DisableLeasing, has anyone else faced similar issues and/or used this DisableLeasing option to improve application performance?
Thanks
Chris.

We haven't had to change anything on Server 2012 which was installed out of the box.
Server 2008 was a different issue and required lots SMBA, OPLocks and Physical "Disk Caching Removal" tweaking.

There was an issue with SMB2 in the early days of Server 2008, which was subsequently fixed by MS and before the fix the workaround was to knock it back to SMB1. Ever since it was fixed we have not had to touch anything to do with these types of networking settings in the normal course of events. These days you definitely want everything running at SMB2 or SMB3 (as negotiated automatically between clients and the server) or it you'll definitely see sub-optimal speed.
Thanks for the replies, yes we used to disable SMB2 to remove the index corruption issue but this now seems to be a performance issue.
This particular scenario is 2 brand new Server 2012 boxes, fully patched. One is the server and one is a remote desktop box. So far nothing has been messed with or tweaked.
An application which used to run fine on the older servers now runs a lot slower, the application in question is Pegasus Opera 3 which I know some of you are familiar with.
Thanks
Chris.

We had some index corruption problems a few years ago and found it was always the RDP users with/causing the problems. Applied some patches to the RDP software and all fine since then. We run Opera 3 here plus our in house app (also VFP 9) and not a problem over the network or RDP. You need to be connecting locally at a gig.

Thanks Peter.
We are not getting any index corruption just speed issues.
The network connection is a team running at 3 gig.
Users are complaining that forms are taking upto 10/15 seconds to load when they use to take a few (we have tested this and they are right).
They are also seeing dropdown boxes that are being populated with values (like the Purchase Orders when posted a receipt in POP) taking 15 seconds before it appears.
The exact same setup on the old servers (again a server and rds setup) is significantly quicker.
Thanks
Chris.

Hi Chris,
What does Opera 3 run like on the server itself? (presuming you have installed the client). You can then rule out the network connection. Our 2012 server is actually a VM but is very quick when running from the server console.

Chris, It may well be worth looking at the network card speed setting on the clients and rather than having "auto-negotiate" on the card, default it to the LAN speed you want to use. We found this speeded up the network traffic considerably.

Chris
How many client PCs connecting?
How many using it via RDP sessions?
Are the RDP sessions similarly slow?
We had a similar one with Opera 3 recently where the vendor eventually discovered that one of the disks in a server RAID array was degraded and spewing errors into the system logs. It was also killing performance.
Chris, Is the server running VM's or is it simply running as a stand alone machine. Our server is running 4 VM's at present with one dedicated to our VFP/SQL 2012 application with no problems. As Alan has said, is the problem still there running the app on the server and is the RDS box suffering from the same slowness?

Hi All
Sorry been out on site!
Running Opera on the main server itself is absolutely fine, it is only slow when running from the RDS server.
This is two physical machines, no VM's involved.
The servers are all of a much better spec than the ones that they replaced and yet Opera runs slower.
There is a second application which uses a database on the server and connects to it via Jet. This application is considerably faster than it used to be on the old kit.
The number of users on the RDS box is around 40 of which around 30 use Opera. The number of users hasn't changed from when the old kit was in use.
So the only real key difference it seems is the files are shared up on a Windows 2012 Server instead of a Windows 2003 Server.
Thanks for all your suggestions.
Regards
Chris.
