I am just wondering whether Visual Foxpro could make use of OpenAI like ChatGPT.... :)
I don't have any purpose nor objective in mind.
If you ask ChatGPT to write FoxPro code you get an odd mix of FoxPro and DotNet that won't run on either platform.

Not that, but calling OpenAI from Visual Foxpro. Does OpenAI have an ODBC bridge/driver? :)
I will NOT be amazed if ChatGPT could control a Boston Dynamics robot to use a PC via keyboard to write dBase programs by copying codes found via Google Search! Well...

Not sure about the ODBC driver. I was impressed by the PHP and javascript code it wrote so I tried to get it to do some foxpro stuff and it didn't get it just right. You can tell it is sort of scraping the code from the web and I think it just couldn't tell the difference between dotnet and foxpro.

I count this as good news. The overlords still need VFP programmers. :)

You should ask ChatGPT if Visual Foxpro could make use of OpenAI like ChatGPT.

I must say - this discussion is potentially very interesting. I was pondering a reply here, when I only saw the Subject line - but, didn't read the actual message content.
The reason being, is because folks at my job (all Engineers) have been recently discussing ChatGPT - including actually playing around with it. In fact, one or 2 of the guys have actually been using ChatGPT to generate Python code. And, myself - I'm actually digging back into doing Python coding for work. I may try the ChatGPT myself to see what it can do in regards to generating Python code.
I will say, since Python is a modern code, where as VFP is more like Legacy programming code - I think ChatGPT would have MUCH Better results for creating Python code that works vs. VFP code.

How about asking ChatGPT to convert VFP codes into Python codes, maybe Dabo? :)
If ChatGPT could understand Python, it should not be too hard for it to understand Visual Foxpro. and maybe Clipper and dBase.

Just saw following old post from West Wind:
ChatGpt and VFP - West Wind Technologies Support Jan 10, 2023 https://support.west-wind.com/Thread6IR0SAABQ.wwt
I am wondering whch human programmer wrote that function... :)

It doesn't *understand* anything, it's monkeys on typewriters.

Some are arguing that it does actually "understand". Depending on how you define the word, I agree.

It will churn out something that looks vaguely passable, but it is all smoke and mirrors. There is no 'I' involved. It's a fancy search engine.
A.I. could indeed be the next dot-Com bubble, after crypto-currencies ... :)

I think it is a very useful tool, but I also agree that, in reality, it is more like a sophisticated search engine than anything else. I wear a lot of hats, and I also often switch languages. I find copilot and chatGPT useful for switching gears and getting boilerplate code started.

This one is interesting. In the UK we have a number / letter quiz TV show called Countdown. It's been running since 1982. Most weekdays I think. Popular with housewives and programmers who work from home.

ChatGPT seems to recognise the concept of Countdown as a game (which is impressive) but gets both answers very wrong. So it can pass a bar exam but apparently not know that 'space' is 5 letters.
Quiz answers are here if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/CasualUK/comments/10qt7d2/turns_out_chatgpt_is_not_...
Does it have any opinions on the lovely Rachel Riley ? ;)
