Sorry to say, but it ain’t happening this year. Or next. If you’re so inclined and financially able, please continue to donate to good causes, but I won’t be raising money with my rides any more. If you’re interested in the reason why:

I feel for you Ed. My knee and my back certainly do. Guess I'll wreck my kidneys/liver with all the naproxen and acetaminophen I take.

Ed - yeah - the CK Video clip is pretty darned funny - and I can also relate to it. With my eyes going bad, chronic back pain for YEARS now, bad knees - yup - been there, done that.
Was also reading your blog post - and saw your comment about idea on redesign of bike handle bars. Have you researched what's already out there - as I BELIEVE that some exotic handle bar designs already exist - even some may be specific for your problem. On the other hand - I could actually prototype something for you via 3D Printing.

Oh how I know THAT story...
A number of years ago I was prescribed Indocin and wow what a Godsend that stuff was... I was virtually pain free after taking it for a few days and could actually touch the ground once again without being in extreme pain... Slept great, woke pain free - life was GOOD after 25 years of chronic pain....
Went back to the doc extolling the virtues of this miracle cure and asked for a lifetime supply and he said oh no, that was just a one time thing - you don't get any more... that sh!t will destroy your liver in no time....
So - how long before it wore off - and you were back in the land of Chronic pain?
I have had Chronic back pain for years now - so, for me - my Hot Tub is a bit of a Godsend - as it does help. Of course, as a Bachelor again - a hot tub has other great perks!
:-)

Sorry to hear your ailments are limiting your activities. I suspect we have a quorum of old guys in the forum who can catalog their glass ankles, rotator cuffs, sleep apnea, fading eyesight, bad knees, diminished hearing, etc. -- and that's just me! A good friend says "Old age is not for the faint of heart."
Inevitable, probably, but certainly working your medical providers to refer you to physical or occupational therapy when available. I've had OTs come up with some good adaptations over the years.
I hope you can find some accommodations that will let you continue to cycle. A number of friends have moved from road bikes to slower-speed trekking and even upright cruisers, "don't go too fast, but they go pretty far." I live near the foothills to the White Mountains, and swear some of my short rides are more vertical than horizontal, but I enjoy getting out and getting some fresh air and rubber-necking.
Also, I don't know if there's anything local, but another friend, a well-known long-distance runner, is enjoying swimming as fitness exercise. Worth considering.
Ted - you bring up some interesting points.
I'm on another forum besides this one - and many of you I am sure can guess what kind of forum it is. And, if your 1st guess was for Bachelors and meeting women - you'd be wrong. So - yeah - it's about 3D Printing.
Well - there is a chap on there - he was very well known in the beginning when the forum started - his knickname was Wing Commander. He's located down under in Australia. I actually did a Skype call with him a couple years ago. A Very interesting chap indeed.
So - at one point - this project he was working on - for which he used 3D Printing to produce some of the parts - in particular - I remember the pedals he had 3D Printed. His project - a type of bike that's a stand up unit. It's like you are walking or jogging when riding the Bike. Its supposedly less strenuous on the body that jogging. And, although it's not a solution for Ed - the discussion here just reminded me of WC's product design!

Ed, Your 60 and, as I type this, I'm just a week or so away from 50 and have had to have both of my knees replaced about 3 years ago. Too much damage, and arthritis, from my Air Force days. Look at swimming at least in the short term, for exercise. You can get a complete workout without a huge equipment expense.

+1!
My Mom used to teach Biology and more in a nursing program. She has been swimming for YEARS as her primary exercise. The thing about swimming - you get the water resistance - but, NO Actual bodily type impacts - which occurs in most Other sports - and thus incurs injury over time. So - yeah a BIG Plus One on Michael's input!!!

Yeah, but I did too much of one stroke and got (or exacerbated) a bad rotator cuff injury. Rotator cuff surgery is one which you want to avoid, by the way. Not Fun.

I started taking fish oil last year after I compiled a list of "Supplements I should take" after doing a google search of "Supplements everyone should take". To my amazement, all my joints felt a lot better. I did further research and found fish oil helps with inflamation and making joints less painful. My knees hurt 75% less than they used to, and I wake up every day with no pain. I used to wake up with shoulder and back pain. I take there recommended dose on the bottle, but I am thinking of increasing it. Give it a try, you should notice a difference in less than a month.
