Hey, all. I'm playing with the idea of writing an app for community band librarians to store their catalogs in. I actually use a Google Sheets file for the Bangor Band, because I'm worried about maintainability for the next person, but I've had a couple of ideas that would make sense to do this as a shared online database app. Since hosting the database myself right now isn't practical, I was wondering if anyone has experience with using a cloud database, and how to get started. I'm leaning towards VB.Net (as a learning project), which makes me think about SQL Azure, but I don't really know anything about it. Cost is a big factor here, if for no other reason that I don't want to waste much money during the development phase. Thanks!

I would recommend opening a DigitalOcean account, running a PostgreSQL database with either a NodeJS, or LEMP server. $5/month.

I have had a Windows app on at GoDaddy for 12+ years now.
Sure in learning you could go to Azure and do this all in the cloud if you wanted. Costs for the cloud are what kind of scare me over the long haul. Would you need to scale to multiple front end servers because so many people are getting their data in or researching it for new pieces for next season? If not I am not sure why anyone would need the advantages of the cloud.
I was asked to help out on a vocal library, for my wife and her choirs, similar to what you are doing but turned it down as I needed paying work instead of community work. Making something like this for the band environment and asking them to give something to offset costs sounds like a great idea. Would bands be able to sell their music to other bands through this site going forward? My son did the marching band routine HS and University so I am kind of knowledgeable on what you are talking about.

I've written VFP apps since 2004 that have used MySQL/MariaDB on the web and have performed perfectly! (Thanks, Bob Lee for his session at GLGDW for inspiring me to go that way, and Paul McNett for his MakeUpdatable.prg in the ProFox archives, and Kevin Cully's help too!)
