Hey there folks,
Hope everyone is having a nice Memorial Day Weekend - at least those of us here that are States side!
So - my main desktop PC was a Barebones system from Boxx Tech. that I built circa 2013. I haven't done any HW updates to it since I bought it. And, I just got am email from MicroCenter - with some nice deals. The one deal I am looking at - saves like $200 on an Intel CPU. But, I am wondering if its worth it to do the upgrade.
Currently - the CPU is an Intel i7-4770 @ 3.4GHz - AFAIK its Quad Core. But, keep in mind - the current system has liquid cooling for the chip. And, although the machine was "barebones" - the chip and cooling system was already pre-installed. I simply installed HD, memory, SD HD, and a hi-end video card. Of course, since current system has an Intel chip - I need to stick w/Intel - even though I would love to go back to an AMD type chip - obviously I can't - and still keep same MoBo.
As such - here is the chip on sale at MC: Coffee Lake Core i7-8700K 3.7GHz (Turbo Speed 4.7GHz) Six-Core/12 Processing Threads.
So - would it be worth it to upgrade to this new chip? And, is it legit to swap a new chip like this into my system? I suspect its fully compatible. And, the other issue - not sure of the complications of the liquid cooling - and whether the chips can be swapped easily and still using same liquid cooling.
Again - I haven't touched any HW stuff in this machine since it was built - which means I really haven't touch HW stuff for years. Although - I did swap an HD on this machine - since the primary HD died.
TIA - L8r! -K-
I would be sceptical about the value of upgrading the CPU in a five year old system - it will probably be constrained by memory and disk speed.
Understood. That's why I figured I would post the Q here - to see what others had to say. Am also thinking about upping the memory - as I only have 8MB in it now...

Hope your bank balance is good. RAM is expensive these days.
I paid £31 for 8GB DDR3 in 2012. Same module today costs £70. I can buy a cheaper brand for £50. DDR4 is even more expensive.
Something's not right here. Seems like priced fixing/cartel.
That's an interesting reason for the price fixing! And, there is also now this whole Bitcoin farming stuff - besides tradtional server farms used for things like 3D Animation rendering. All this besides the increased capacity/need for desktop computing in the corp. biz world!

Huge demand from server farms, mobile devices and a lack of fabrication capacity.
Well, it's supply and demand. I think bitcoin has been more of a factor in trebling graphics card prices, for some types of card, it's that GPU power they're after as opposed to memory.
Yes - that's true - Bitcoin farms are based upon Graphics cards. But, don't forget - these days there tends to be a lot of Memory in those graphics cards - to help handle all the processing. So - that's really what I was referring to.

I wouldn't touch the CPU, not worth the hassle with mounting and thermal reconnect.
If you want to upgrade, change your HD to a SSD. This is the most noticible change you can do.

Agreed. I have a i7 3770 from 2012 which still rocks. Much faster than the i7-7500 in my laptop I bought this year.
I use SSDs everywhere here, with a couple of spinning TB HDs for storage. Samsung SSDs are excellent.
I even have a SSD in my 30 year old Amiga 4000. mSATA with an IDE adapter.
Hey there Paul,
Yeah - based upon the feedback - I'm not going to bother with CPU upgrade - too much of a hassle. I may, however, go for a 2nd SSD. As for your Amiga 4000 - that rocks! I had a used Amigo 1000 - but, sadly - I sold that off a couple of years ago...

Hey there w00dy!
Thanks for the input. Yeah - I kinda figured the mounting and thermal reconnect would be a REAL Hassle - and why I was wondering if it was worth it.
I actually had an SSD in the system - along with an HD. Maybe I could add another SSD - but, again - not sure its worth it. Would have to have the core programs run from the new SSD - like my main 3D CG apps. But, who knows - I might just do that...
