I am curious about some VFP data types. What exactly are they?
For each of them, is the data type ever used as a table or cursor's column data type or as the type of an input control's data value? For some, I have another question.
G: General I understand this type should be avoided. Is it of any use these days?

Gene, General Field Type Not used very much at all as there really isn't anything you gain from embedding general fields if your database is large - apart from Memo field bloat. It is much better to embed links to the application you want to open as opposed to the "packaged data". One exception I use is when having to deal with rich text for transient or limited field numbers where it is quite useful. You can bind a General Field to a grid column if required and I do it to display images but on a large grid with large image sizes it does make navigation ponderously slow. I used to use the Kodak Image Thumbnail control when it was generally available back when as a free pre-installed control because it supported annotation and titles.
Screen Type I am assuming you mean Screen Object as opposed to type. If so then I find this a great object to add "global properties" or user generated "global objects" which can pass data between forms or running programs. You can also use the Application object but I find this somewhat limiting unless you are requiring access to the application object's properties - for instance Application.ActiveProject.Homedir => Giving the base folder for the current project.
Attaching objects to the _Screen object is much more useful and elegant than declaring variables as public and much more powerful as you can simulate the equivalent of Global Constants and easily add new properties to say a "global Object" as required and also on the fly.

Screen type (S) is old DOS functionality to capture the DOS screen to a variable. I believe the command CLEAR SCREEN would clear them out.

I think we're confusing a bunch of related items, as "screen" has been used to mean different things at different times in Xbase and Fox.
SAVE SCREEN TO <memvar> saves an memory variable of the text and colors of a DOS screen. Reverse engineering that format from .MEM files was the basis of a well-received article in FoxTalk October 1992 by a new-writer-to-the-Fox-world by the name of Ted Roche <s>.
Screen variables, General Fields and .MEM files were favorite ways to blow up VFP while beta-testing new versions, as they are odd ducks and not always well supported by commands like ALLTRIM() <g>
A data table type Picture was created for the Mac version of FoxPro 2.x, perhaps 1.x, but sadly my references for those days have gone to the great paper recycling center.
SCREEN is also the name of the underlying background to the IDE, as in ACTIVATE WINDOW SCREEN
_SCREEN is the VFP Object representing the updated version of that window, and an interesting place to hang additional things for global reference.
CLEAR SCREEN as Bill points out, is how to clear that window.
