A friend is using a program I wrote to send emails requesting a piece of information using SMTP with CDO. The program is only used twice a year. Last time it was used it was set up for his Sky account which worked fine however this time it has stopped working so he set up a Yahoo account which is not working either. Can anyone confirm the correct settings for Yahoo and SMTP please? We have tried outgoing mail server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com, port = 465 and 587, use ssl = .T., authenticate = .T. and username = 'name'@yahoo.com.
Thanks

I don't think Yahoo allows you to send emails via CDO unless you have a paid account. At least that was they told me several years ago. CDO works with Gmail and Office 365 accounts.

Fred, I thought it was you couldn't POP or sync with IMAP to the account unless it was a paid account.
Gmail is locking down a lot. You will need an OAuth2 token to use Gmail with SMTP before the end of the year. https://9to5google.com/2019/12/17/g-suite-less-secure-apps/
Or you need to turn on 2FA, and get a device password to use.
Things are getting difficult.
Office365 will not have the ability to use an OAuth2 token for SMTP access. They will require the use of an API if they start to block SMTP access like Google is.

I hear you Tracy, never a dull moment having to do things over on a whim.
The Yahoo thing was a long time ago. I don't use them anymore, so it's just water under the bridge to me. <shrug>

So for those of us using CDO now with a gmail account (mine is MBSS.bugs@gmail.com), what's our next option to have our VFP apps still report seamlessly without needing any intervention?

You may be able to turn on 2FA, and generate an application password. I don't know if Google will shut it down if it is used from multiple IP addresses in a short amount of time.
Chilkat has an email component in the ActiveX. There is plenty of documentation on using the tool to get and use an oauth token. Sadly, I don't believe you could use a single token for multiple installs.
I would consider a service that allows you to post the errors to. The service would be a single point to send the email from. This would also become a single point of failure in your error reporting mechanism.

Many thanks to you both - you have answered my query as to why it couldn't be done. I'll have to investigate an alternative method 😊

Our customers had been required to set a "less secure apps" type of setting for Yahoo. Now they are required to use a specific "device password".
I don't have the ports handy, but I think most providers have switched to TLS 1.2.
If the user is on a Windows 7 machine, they may need to have the latest patches and to enable the TLS correctly for it to work. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3140245/update-to-enable-tls-1-1-an d-tls-1-2-as-default-secure-protocols-in-wi#easy
That's a long url, here is a bitly version: https://bit.ly/2UBddmS
If they are on an older OS, I don't have any option for my customers but suggest they upgrade the computer.
