Fellow Gurus. Any input welcome as to why my VFP9 all serviced packed to date and working no problem on Win 10, 64 bit has suddenly died and won't come back to life. Not worried about why it went wrong, I just want a working VFP system.
For some reason VFP remembers the old projects I had loaded at the time it died (C5 error...) and no won't forget the projects that were loaded.
First I tried a repair option and still C5's on opening and then tried a n uninstall, reboot then install and it still c5's on opening my old projects which I assumed it would have forgotten but obviously not. Removed all traces of FoxUser.* to no avail.
Running VFP 9.exe /regserver or vfp9 /a has no effect on loading the old projects despite saying it should ignore any registry settings an primarily unregistering VFP.
Any ideas how I get a simple no projects loaded VFP application loaded?
Of course it would happen on Year End stocktake day wouldn't it!! Grrrrrrrrrr!

Hi Dave,
Not seen that before and looks like you have tried all the right things. Have you done any searches of the registry after an uninstall to remove any VFP9 data (or run ccleaner.exe)?
One thing that might be worth a try would be to uninstall and install again using a custom path not the standard \program files etc.

Tools/Options dialogs save its settings to the (evil, imho) Registry so when you reinstall, you have all the wonderful features you reinstalled to avoid.
Find "Open Last Project" option and turn it off. Shutdown VFP and restart.
If you can't start VFP because it's trying to open a bad project, use your favorite Registry tool, Seach for "FoxPro" find the "Options" tree and the "Last Project" option. It's set to 1, set it to 0, save.

Ted, Have searched the registry for all possible "open Last Project" options and can't find any setting that may hold the list of mru's. Have even tried to find one uniquely named project that would only occur once in the registry if it was held there and can't find that either.
Somehow and somewhere VFP is picking up this last used list but I'll be damned if I can find it. It may well be that even with a clean "no last project install" that VFP may still throw a C5 in which case the dreaded Microsoft updates may be the reason but I need to get to that point first.
Of course there is always the option of restoring a backup but that will be the last resort!

Searched for "project" and "LastProject" and found many items in VFP lines too.

If you know the names of the "missing" projects, you may be able to just create "dummy" pjx/pjt files and stick them where VFP is looking for them (copy/rename from pjx/pjts you do have). Then VFP should start all the way (and you can close them, delete them, etc, etc).
The Most Recently Used (MRU) list might be inside the foxuser.dbf instead of the registry. Not sure though. I saw something in my registry for a 'last opened' project in VFP, but it had a "wonderful" guid key (smh).

If it is in the registry you may have to figure out the guid assigned to VFP and then find the RecentItems key under that (and maybe find out the guid assigned to the pjx file)

Tools/Options saves to the Registry. Mine is located at the intuitive:
Computer\HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4056148145-4242425167-3015849444-1001\Software\Microsoft\VisualFoxPro\9.0\Options
That just stores the on/off settings of whether to open the last project. The default is 1/on/true if you've never saved Tools/Options settings, so it is possible there is no Registry entry. Hard to believe, though.
I'm pretty sure the MRU is in the foxuser file. I found my foxuser file in a roming profile.
Create a shortcut for VFP and explicitly include a config.fpw file with the -C option and in the config file put RESOURCE=OFF

Your suggestion sorted it after I restored back last night's folder: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9" in its entirety.
Setting the resource=off allowed me to load a barebones VFP and after loading each of the projects that were causing VFP to hang I found no problems. So all back and working now thank you.
No idea what caused the problem, neither do I care at the moment.
I'll investigate more once stock take is over and I have had an Easter break.

Of course it would happen on Year End stocktake day wouldn't it!! Grrrrrrrrrr!

Seems more likely to me that the culprit was the resource file and not the PJX's, but either way it's quite gratifying to know I helped you arrive at a solution. Much like getting a pat on the head from Uncle Ted... 😉 --

Your suggestion sorted it after I restored back last night's folder: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual FoxPro 9" in its entirety.
Setting the resource=off allowed me to load a barebones VFP and after loading each of the projects that were causing VFP to hang I found no problems. So all back and working now thank you.
No idea what caused the problem, neither do I care at the moment.

Richard, The plot thickens now in that if I set Resource=ON then the same problem arises, with the old pre-loaded projects so it must be the resources that are screwing things up. I can't for the life of me find where these resources are held though, I have cleaned the registry of all VFP and Foxpro entries as well as uninstalling and re-installing VFP....
Anyhow, once again thanks for the heads up and now I can hunt for the elusive resources!!

I thought RESOURCE=ON equals foxuser table, not the various reg keys that store options. Dump it out to a file using F2B per Fernando's suggestion if you want to save any of that data and tehn try packing it or just starting with a clean one.

Do you have a "Microsoft VisualFoxpro" folder under this location? %LocalAppData%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\
Paste that in the address bar of the File Explorer.
You might find a corrupt foxuser.dbf/fpt in there which is causing the problem.

Tracy, Turns out it was the VFP data in my folder:
C:\Users\Dave Crozier\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Visual FoxPro 9
That was causing the problem.
Simply deleting it removed the error so I needn't have uninstalled and installed VFP at all.
As for Ted's suggestion which I tried first, I have no entries in the registry corresponding to the ones he found.
Anyway, all fixed and I can go on Easter break with a working PC to return to (note that I'm NOT taking it with me!!)

I have some ideas to check, based on similar situation in the past:
Preferences: There are two things related to this; foxuser.dbf and the "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\VisualFoxPro" registry key. - Try deleting (or renaming) all foxuser.dbf you have, or convert to text with FoxBin2Prg if you have some foxuser that is really important for you. Later you can regenerate that file in case of some corruption - Try renaming the registry key, adding something at the end so VFP can't recognize it an regenerate a new key, soy you keep a copy of the settings in case you want to check differences
Security: There are two main things on this topic: - Check on viruses: all we know the strange behaviours they can cause - Check if the Security Department or admins have changed some security or access policies: This one specially have beed very dangerous to us, at the extent that nobody did can save VFP own settings and IDE/applications start to have strange behaviours, even causing non functioning or many errors.
