Hi all
I am afraid that I have been rather quiet since being made redundant at the end of February but I am now having a problem with "Network" in File Explorer. This is the setup:
Virgin Hub 3 connected via cable to
DesktopPC, Laptop, US robotics Mini NAS adapter and Netgear Powerline adapter
I have an external drive (STORAGE-0001) connected via USB to the NAS adapter.
On both the desktop and the laptop Network in File Explorer shows
Media Devices(1)
Sorage-0001 which when opened shows the NAS manager in a browser window/tab
Network Infrastructure (1)
ARRIS TG2492LG-85 Router which when opened shows the Hub 3 settings in a browser window/tab
On the Desktop, Network in File Manager shows Computers (3)
DesktopPC
Laptop
Storage-001 (which when opened shows the shared Public folder on the external drive)
However, on the Laptop, Network in File Manager shows Computers (1) which is the laptop itself and when opened shows its shared folder(s).
DesktopPC and Storage-0001 are not shown but can be opened by typing their network names (\ DesktopPC and \Storage-0001 file://Storage-0001 ) into the Explorer address bar.
After searching and trying all manner of suggestions I am still unable to resolve the issue (I am not even sure whether changes are required on the laptop or the desktop or both). I can provide further information if needed.
Any help or suggestions would be highly appreciated. Many thanks, and apologies for the length of the message
Paul Newton

A wild guess: dfid you enable SMB 1.0 support in all Win 10 PCs including that laptop?

Don't enable SMB1 support. You might as well leave your front door open when you leave the house.
Thanks Alan I have now disabled SMB1 on both computers and the Network node in Explorer now shows no computers at all (on either computer). Do I just accept that this is a limitation of Windows 10 Home Edition? Paul

Hi Ted et al I tried everything there without success. I'm at the stage where the desktop is showing no computers on the network (not even itself) and the laptop is showing all the computers and a networked printer, but only if SMB1 is enabled (which, after Alan's warning, I don't want to do). Would I be right in thinking that I could solve everything by upgrading to Windows 10 Professional?
Many thanks Paul Newton

Very strange for me. I have a small home network - laptop and PCs with WinXP, Win7ultimate, Win10home, Win10enterprise and Linux/Xubuntu and everything marked as "public" is visible and usable without any additional configuration.

If all PCs in the network were Win 8/10, then you could disable SMB1. I forgot whether Win 7 needed SMB1.
You might also try enabling all Function Discovery services in all PCs without enabling SMB1.

Sorry, Paul, that was my best guess. I quit Windows networking when AD came along. I'm sure people have solved this problem, keep searching.
Upgrading may be the fastest/cheapest solution, I agree.

If your NAS OS had WSDD, you could avoid using SMB1.

The whole SMB1/WSDD thing is all about the workground browser. You should always be able to access shares by fully qualified IP address or name(e.g. \1.2.3.4\share).
