You crack me up on a crappy Monday afternoon.
The ABM community getting the ability to use Azure. Yeah that might get 0 use.

I don't think so. SQL Server is compiled and runs on Windows machines. I don't think this is porting SQL Server to Linux.
I've been hooking up Linux clients to consume SQL Server data for a decade, using ODBC and TDS interfaces.
This is just SQL Server accessible via "the cloud," isn't it?

As far as I can tell, it's SQL Server running on Linux.

Maybe another push is required on VFP now M$ has had a rethink....

Push, who? The people who made VFP are all retired, the people who decided to kill off VFP don't even work for MS any more, and the few Fox Team members still in MS have (some pretty prestigious) jobs in other outfits.
Beating the dead horse.
This is a nice idea, but I think that the problem is that VFP is COM+ oriented, and this is a technology that MS wants to let behind.
But for desktop-apps it could have some life.
A native multi-platform VFP could be nicer, something Linux native in example :-P
The reality is that this will not happen, because it is a very good language and cheap, so it is not a good deal for MS. El 8/3/2016 16:48, "Dave Crozier" DaveC@flexipol.co.uk escribió:

VFP was written in C++ against the Win32 API. Making VFP open source isn't going to change that. I rather focus on Guineu which could run on any current platform. You might have noticed that
https://bitbucket.org/cwollenhaupt/guineu
is showing activity again. ;-)
what benefit could there possibly be? What ROI?
Exactly. Especially since Microsoft are intent on moving their development tools into an open source, cross-platform, cloud-friendly paradigm. Why would you re-engineer the functionality to work with DBF when everything going forward will talk to a database server directly or through an API? So when you strip away that, and by extension the ancillary parts like the report designer what are you left with? A syntax, essentially. Which (with all the legacy crap like @ ... SAY removed) a third-party could produce as a .NET language if there was demand.
In terms of future proofing VFP I'd be happy with MS providing the same 'it just works' status for the runtimes that the VB6 ones have.

A physical package? I think the only way SQL Server has been available on physical media for the last 10 or 15 years has been via MSDN subs and even they are being phased out :)
Beta previews of it are available now for some people.
