I am doing some work with a local children's charity. They have an administrator who keeps all of the correspondence and reports, etc on her computer. When she goes on holiday a deputy takes over but doesn't have access to all of the data. I have offered a redundant external HDD that they could keep all of the data on and just transfer the drive to the deputy. Because the data is confidential the HDD will need to be encrypted. The solutions I have looked at so far seem to require software to be installed on the computer and I am not certain that the drive could be passed between two PCs. Ideally there would be some form of encryption with the software on the external drive. Can anyone suggest a suitable program? It would need to be cheap (free?) as, like all small charities, they don't have much money. Unfortunately BitLocker won't work as their OS are the Home version.

Truecrypt is very good and I have used it for years. There was a bit of a fuss about the encryption algorithm being breakable but to all intents and purposes it is fine unless you really really want to decrypt the data. Best of all it is FREE as in totally free.
The Truecrypt program needs to be installed on the PC in order to mount the drive and then unencrypt it for normal use but it is a couple of minutes of a job. It is also cross platform (Mac and Windows). Only drawback is that the "encrypted disk" needs to be pre-allocated size wise.
I believe there is a Truecrypt alternative that was developed to circumvent the potential access issues but can't remember its name.
I use it on all of my USB Drives.

Thanks Dave - it's always good to get a recommendation from someone who is using it!

The fuss was because the developers 'disappeared' leaving a cryptic message.

"Not Safe Anymore." (N)ot (S)afe (A)nymore. NSA. I don't know whether to side with the tinfoil hats on this one or not. :-)
The replacement is VeraVrypt...
Also, if you are Windows 7,8 or 10 then why not use the Windows built in Bitlocker software? That is definitely free and already installed. Easy to use as well. I use this for the USB drives at work and it encrypts the whole drive so no need to pre-allocate space and no speed loss either.

Oops, just saw your Bitlocker "can't do" ... sorry! Scratch that idea!

Have you considered cloud storage instead?

No. That might be a very good idea. It depends on the quantity of data which I have yet to determine.
Thanks.
