Later, "Restart Now or Restart Later?" revealed that some of the recent updates STILL were not successfully installed. Restarted.
Lather, rinse and repeat the above three times.
A recent Win 10 update broke the Update History. Could that be why the user thinks nothing has been installed?

I've got to get back to reading wOOdy's column more regularly!
Windows Automatic Updates. Just Say No. (TM)
Yeah, a mixed blessing at its very best. A lot of folks wouldn't update at all if the machine didn't do it for them, but I'd really like to wait 48 hours and let other people find out the updates aren't working.

And as a double-bonus, if you had any updates hidden, say because they corrupted your machine, the cumulative update un-hid them so they get applied and, *boom*.
How can you not love the company that does this?
We STILL have about half our machines at work and my personal laptop, that won't reboot properly after some updates. Get the black screen with the spinning white dots forever. The only common thing between them is they are all Dells.
Microsoft is really beginning to bug me (more so now then ever!). We have been considering ChromeBoxes and remote desktop into a Windows server, but even that would require massive change. We are heavily dependent on Excel automation for lots of things we do.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that!

Also, there's an issue that you are just moving the problem to the remote end. One of my VFP clients has a terminal service hosted at a datacenter and an IT staff to manage the machine, but they still run into mind-bending issues when updates come out, locking up VMs, blocking printing, etc. And it's our fault, since our app isn't working <s>.
I spent about 7 hours on the phone with about 7 to 10 different people at Microsoft the first time we ran into that. They were more interested in passing me off to someone else rather than coming up with a solution. About the 3rd person I had talked to at least gave something that works, but not in every case.
We had to: pull the power cord and wait 30 seconds before plugging it back in and trying again. Works on some of the machines.
through trial and error, we came up with these: pull the network cable - works on some. pull the USB dongle for wireless mouse/keyboard - works on some, hold down the left shift key while booting - works for 1 machine. for my laptop, I have to pull the battery, sometimes have to do it 3 or 4 times before it works. combination of the above - works on some.
A complete fustercluck if I ever saw one!

All I use now is a chromebook logged into a terminal server, but it's not without problems. Seems you have to have a computer with few extensions loaded to avoid freezing.

Absolutely! Chromebooks rock! I picked up a 15" ASUS with 1920x1080, 2Gb, 16 Gb SSD, refurb ~$150, and it is pretty much the perfect Net Computer we've been promised for a decade or more. With that as a front end, and Chromecast hooked up to the TV as the back end, it's a pretty good little browser and entertainment center, decent webmail interface, etc.
However, when you're dealing with Windows, locally or remote, you're dealing with all the joy MS packed into it: security flaws, unsafe software, shaky updates, 32-/64-bit incompatibilities, weird network behavior, etc.
You guys are making me jealous. I've been supporting my company's five (all different models) MacBooks since Jan 2014 without a single hiccup across 4 OS upgrades. No unexpected reboots ... everything pretty much just works. Very boring :)

Yeah, not a lot of money to be made in computers that Just Works (tm).
That's what's great about Windows. Make America Reboot Again!

ROFLMBO!!!!!!
A potential client of mine uses Citrix and is very happy with it. He said they basically wipe/replace the image daily. I guess that way they don't have to worry about viruses? If I were to develop a desktop app for them, I'd have to consider how to upgrade it easily. He said updating/creating the image is usually painful and takes a long time.

Isn't citrix just a virtual volume? It has been over a decade since I had to mess with it.
