Hello there Fellow Pro-Foxers!
Happy Monday! I hope you all had a good weekend.
So, I've been having this REALLY Weird problem!!!
I was recently trying to run the Code References Tool - but, something Odd happened. As in - Nothing happened! And, I tried it a bunch of times.
Now, at the time - I had this particular project opened on my screen - and I wanted to obviously search it. But, it was a No Go. Then, last week I tried it again - but, I was in a different session of VFP, and I was trying to do a search on a Different project. When an odd thing happened - I got a warning saying this other project was already opened. And, indeed that project was opened in another session of VFP. I was like - WTF - that makes no sense! So, I went into that other session of VFP, closed down that project - and SURE Enough - when I tried to open the Code References Tool - instead, it literally just opened up this one project.
It just didn't seem to make sense. So, last week I was looking into this problem - searched the issue on the web - closest I got was a response by Tamara suggesting that this person recompile the FoxRef project. This was the link to the person reporting the problem: https://www.tek-tips.com/threads/vfp9-code-references-problem.1639205/
I actually DID try and recompile the FoxRef project, but - it turns out I got an error where it could not properly read one of the forms. Even when I tried to directly open the Form - I could not open the file.
But, I figured I would try something - and, I WAS Indeed able to actually Run the FoxRef App - and I WAS able to actually do searches. However, it's weird that I have run the App directly instead of from the menu system.
I was just looking around A LOT in the VFP Help - but, can't seem to easily figure out how I can see if a menu system somehow got corrupted. Which seems it Must be the case. I even looked around to see if maybe the FoxPro config file got corrupted - but, I already found out there is NO Config in use.
So, if anyone can give me a pointer on how to fix this problem - that would be awesome!
-Kurt
Try GoFIsh. Way faster than code refs.

Kurt,
I've seen this - where Code References just NoOps. Quit/restart VFP. And Go-Fish provides a wealth of features.

Hey there RK & Bill,
Gotta say - it's funny and Ironic that you guys would write what you did. Since I just KNEW that someone would respond with the suggestion of GoFish. I Knew it - and knew folks would say it would be fast! As I saw this exact same reply in the Tek-Tips thread where the other guy reported the problem.
Of course, maybe I should implement it into my own FoxPro menu system - maybe under Tools as well - for quick access. I suspect Others have already done that! Am I wrong?
I will try and give Go-Fish a shot right now.

OK Dave - Yeah - I got it!
3 Votes for GoFish (NOT the Card game) - and NO Votes for the original Code References tool.
But, honestly - I'd still like to figure out why Code References is NOT working correctly.
However, more so - I COULD "In theory" replace Code References tool in the VFP menu with GoFish - since they BOTH simply run as an App.
Which I think would be the best route to take. So - I'd still like to know how to access the VFP menu system to see why it's running the wrong thing instead of Code References - and, once I figured that out, I could potentially replace it with GoFish...
I even watched a bit of Matt Slay's video about GoFish, and I could listen to his voice-over. Sounds like Matt was located in the Southern USA - considering his accent. Was interesting hearing Matt speak, knowing he is no longer with us...

I'd start by installing Thor. Pretty much everything interesting that happens with our dear legacy language can be installed via Thro including GoFish.

Yes, I did already know of Thor (which is also the name of one of my cousins) - and I did see GoFish can be installed with Thor.
But, honestly - I want to better understand why the current Code References tool is running the wrong thing. Am really trying to figure out how to display WHAT the current VFP menu system is trying to do - what or How it's trying to run something strange when I try to select the Code References menu option.
I figured that once I see what it's running now - I could then replace it with the GoFish App.
I actually did drop GoFish on my PC here at work - and I actually have it running in VFP right now - but, simply by typing: DO "C:\PAKO\GoFish-master\Source\GoFish.APP"
If I could change a standard VFP menu drop-down to run GoFish - I think that would be the efficient way to run GoFish!
Just sayin'...

Curiosity is good. IIRC there's a system variable that determines what happens when you pick Code References from the standard VFP menu but all that stuff should be found in the VFP Help. And you do have the VFPX version of the VFP9 help, yes? 😊 If not, that's also available via Thor.
IIRC there are Thor videos and info on how to customize your VFP system menu with Thor tools. Jim Nelson put a great deal of effort into docs for Thor.

Yes - RK - I have been spending HOURS in the VFP Help file today - trying to track down how to look at what VFP is trying to run when I try to run Code Ref from the Tool menu. But, so far I can not find an answer. Also, I think other strange things are happening.
I actually turned to my new Best Buddy Claude for assistance. But, so far - striking out. A Lot of the things he is suggesting is not working - even things that VFP help says should work a certain way - is not. I WAS - using the help of Claude - able to Add a New menu item under Tools. I essentially had it run the original FoxRef.app - and that works. So, I could add GoFish to the menu that was. I'm just frustrated that I can't seem to determine what is happening when I use the current Code References menu item.
It's VERY Frustrating! Ugh...

Reading documentation; always good times. 😊
Per the Help the thing that gets run from the standard VFP menu is stored in _FOXREF system variable.
I know Jim had a whole how-to for adding a custom menu to the standard sysmenu that was driven out of Thor. Just don't recall where...

I figured that once I see what it's running now - I could then replace it with the GoFish App. I actually did drop GoFish on my PC here at work - and I actually have it running in VFP right now - but, simply by typing:
DO "C:\PAKO\GoFish-master\Source\GoFish.APP"
If I could change a standard VFP menu drop-down to run GoFish - I think that would be the efficient way to run GoFish!
Just sayin'...

Well, I know the tools menu is _MTOOLS
I found out - if I run this command: ?PRMBAR('_MTOOLS', GETBAR('_MTOOLS',14))
I actually get this as the results: Code References
Which is good.
Now, when you said - "how-to for adding a custom menu to the standard sysmenu" - did you really mean adding a custom menu ITEM? As I did manage to add a menu item already. And, using that Same technique - I can Force the "Code References" menu item back to the way it should be.
But, yeah - if _FOXREF contains what VFP is trying to run - I should be able to simply print out the value in that variable - to see what it is running. Correct? Cause - if I do it now - it holds a blank value.
Which does not seem right... ________________________________________ From: ProFox on behalf of Richard Kaye Sent: Monday, May 19, 2025 4:33 PM To: profox@leafe.com Subject: RE: Code Ref Tool is Broken...

Per the Help the thing that gets run from the standard VFP menu is stored in _FOXREF system variable.
I know Jim had a whole how-to for adding a custom menu to the standard sysmenu that was driven out of Thor. Just don't recall where...

Ugh...
I meant adding a new top level menu that contains all your preferred tools. There are a bunch of folks who've done that over the years so it's not really a Thor thing.
https://github.com/VFPX/Thor/blob/master/Docs/Thor_videos.md
There's a nice little topic in the Help on _FOXREF, including what the default value is.

P.S. Nope - we have not ever met in person - which is too bad. As of now - I've met VERY Few Famous FoxPro people in person. One was Stephen Russell back on Long Island several years ago. And, back in Toledo, OH at the Fox SW conf. where FoxPro for DOS was first unveiled - I was lucky enough to meet the child star from Lassie - Tom Rettig - who sadly passed away quite a number of years ago!

I've met Eric in person. He's not dull at all. 😉
When you took him semi-seriously, Kurt, I almost fell out of my chair. 😊

Hey Kurt, we must've never met in person because that's just my sense of humor, as dull as it may be.
Yup - I hear you RK!
That's why I came here for the Coffee (or the coding help) - but, I STAY because of the humor and camaraderie!!!
Glad I was able to help Lighten your day (and almost lighten the weight upon your chair) - with my response.
Yes, I'm sure Eric is a rather humorous chap to meet in person - or at least certainly NOT a Dull guy!

One of the best things about getting into Thor is its built on top of VFP. Everything (almost) is a PRG and metadata lives in tables which we all know how to debug and manipulate. You like the Thor behavior for any tool out of the box; just use it as is. Want to customize things to your preferences; it’s all there for us to change the way we want. Kudos to Jim Nelson and Matt Slay as the progenitors.

You can find it in his 50 ways to launch a tool video. Roughly 12 minutes in.

________________________________________ From: ProFox on behalf of Richard Kaye Sent: Monday, May 19, 2025 4:33 PM To: mailto:profox@leafe.com Subject: RE: Code Ref Tool is Broken...
Reading documentation; always good times. 😊
Per the Help the thing that gets run from the standard VFP menu is stored in _FOXREF system variable.
I know Jim had a whole how-to for adding a custom menu to the standard sysmenu that was driven out of Thor. Just don't recall where...

Ugh... _______________________________________________ Post Messages to: mailto:ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: https://url.us.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/wUN6CXD70rIXAp2DcrHwfWZK-8?domain=mai... I've been retired for 15years now and have only done some VFP coding to maintain a program I wrote for a local charity about 10 years ago. Thor sounds interesting, I've tried googling but can't be certain that what I have found is the Thor you are referring to - is there a website with details?

Go to Tools, Options, File Locations tab and see what the "Code References" setting is set to. It is probably also blank.
Reset it to wherever you're storing your FoxRef.app file and see what happens, after saving and turning VFP off and back on.
If nobody's mentioned it yet, GoFish is an excellent replacement. ;)

It is indeed, or if you want to work outside of VFP:
Thanks for your input Alan. Based upon Ted's reply - I could now even set GoFish as my search Default in VFP!
COOL!!!

Eric - I just HAVE to say - that your comment actually comes across as funny.
Funny, since it means you didn't read the whole thread here - since a BUNCH of people already mentioned GoFish - and my 1st comment to the 1st person who suggested that - is that I just KNEW that someone was going to mention GoFish - since I actually first saw that suggestion when I did a web search about my problem.
So - yeah, a bunch of folks did suggest it. And, I did indeed already install it on my PC and was trying it out like yesterday or Friday initially.
But, then I got the reply from Ted yesterday - and I felt like I needed to do a Forehead Slap!!! As I have the Options window opened now...

Hey Ted - thanks SO MUCH for that feedback!!!
And, when I just went into the Options window, I found in the File Locations tab exactly what I thought I would see.
So, previously (last week) when I tried to launch the Code References - it would instead literally open up a particular VFP project. But, yesterday - I simply closed all my VFP open sessions, then started VFP up again - and hit Code References, and sure enough - this time around NOTHING happened. Then, after your suggestion - this morning I opened up the Options Window, looked in the File Locations tab - and sure enough I found the entry for the Code References location to be blank - as expected.
As such, just now - I reset it to the actual location - and now Code References actually works.
Also, now, if I do this in the command window - "? _FOXREF" - I get this now "c:\program files (x86)\microsoft visual foxpro 9\foxref.app" instead of it just printing a blank line on the screen.
Now, since I was doing so much digging thru the VFP Help yesterday, I figured I would try one more search to see if I could find specific help on "Code References" - and that was indeed in the VFP Help. But, just now reading thru the Entire help page for Code References - I was surprised to find there was NO Reference at all to the Options Window & File Locations - to show where VFP points to the actual tool.
Oh well - problem now Solved!
Thanks again Ted - U Rock!
-K
