Hey Ted - interesting pop-quiz!
Turns out - there are a BUNCH of VFP books here at my day job - none of them being used. AT one point - they were going to throw them away when they moved to the new office (which occurred about a year ago) - but, they were not tossed. They are still here...

And still unused? :)
I have no idea how many are actually unused. They got ALL the books WAY before I was here on the scene... :-)

Two. The Hacker's Guide To Visual FoxPro 3.0, and the one I wrote. :)

One of each.

See above.
- What book do you regret not owning?
None.
- Would you buy VFP books if you could find them?
No. Maybe 15 years ago I would have.
- Preferred format? Paper, PDF, CHM, ePub, HTML, other (which?)
Any full-text indexed electronic format.
- How many VFP books do you own?
Everyone single one that was published from FoxPro 2.0 thru VFP.
- How many are dead-tree paper and how many ebooks?
All dead tree editions. May have a few ebook equivalents.
- What is your most well-worn VFP books? Or most referenced ebook?
Hackers' Guide by a large margin. Looks like its been thru a war.

None.
- Would you buy VFP books if you could find them?
No. Currently purchasing Python, NoSQL, Machine Learning, Cloud books.
- Preferred format? Paper, PDF, CHM, ePub, HTML, other (which?)
Kindle format because it sizes to devices better than other electronic formats. No longer plan on purchasing paper based books.
Malcolm

- How many VFP books do you own?
4: Hackers guide to vfp 6.0, Client Server Apps with Visual Foxpro and SQL server, Internet Applications with Visual Foxpro, Deploying Visual Foxpro solutions.
- How many are dead-tree paper and how many ebooks?
All are real paper, but I know I have a pdf copy of one. The fact that I don't remember which one, or where it is, tells you my preference for question 6.
- What is your most well-worn VFP books? Or most referenced ebook?
Deployment - probably glanced through it a few times. Hacker's Guide - used a few times when something was acting odd.
Internet apps and Client server Apps? Falling to pieces, with several bookmark papers sticking out everywhere. Huge return on my investment for those two.
- What book do you regret not owning?
Nothing comes to mind.
- Would you buy VFP books if you could find them?
At this point, doubtful. Maybe would be interested in a VFP to Python migration book, or something like that.
- Preferred format? Paper, PDF, CHM, ePub, HTML, other (which?)
Paper. I like knowing where the book is physically, and be able to quickly flip back and forth while retaining an idea of where I am in the book.

I got the Hacker's Guide 6.0 the CHM file. The physical book was given away to a company that hired me. :)
- How many are dead-tree paper and how many ebooks?
You meant school textbooks and photocopied notes? I thought only paperbook fictions were using recycled paper. Textbooks and photocopying are using white quality papers.
- What is your most well-worn VFP books? Or most referenced ebook?
- What book do you regret not owning?
None of them were frequently-used. Maybe the tasks I dealed with were not complicated.
- Would you buy VFP books if you could find them?
Only if they were cheap! :)
- Preferred format? Paper, PDF, CHM, ePub, HTML, other (which?)
The modern standard publishing format is PDF, searchable ones.

Hey Man-wai,
Isn't it about time you upgraded your Ubuntu 9.10 ;-)

Thanks, all for your answers!
Crazy Monday morning thought before the coffee kicked in was working up a web storefront to sell/resell classic VFP books.
Coffee's working by now.
Never mind.

I don't know how much you spent on that coffee, but I think it just repaid you many, many times over! :-P

At that price, the book should be about 4 inches thick, wouldn't it? ($50 an inch).

Yep. Worth it, in its day. I was brought in to tech-edit a portion of the book, along with John Scobey, and then promoted to pinch-hit and rewrite a few chapters. The primary authors -- Lisa Slater (Nicholls) and Steven Arnott -- were top-notch, and I learned a lot, both about writing and FoxPro! "With" credits went to Nancy Jacobsen, Joseph Gotthelf and yours truly; introduction by Dr. David L. Fulton.
Book was over 1000 pages long, and there were matching DOS and Windows versions. Listed for $35.00 in 1993, which is ~$60 in 2017 USD. I suspect the price appreciation is a combination of the high quality of the product and the fact that if they ever sell one, they need to pay off 20 years of storage!
