Hi gang A client has been told windows 10 does not work with windows server 2007 and that they need to pay 15,000 AUD (Australia) to upgrade. I smell a money maker there. I don't use a server any more but does anyone have a view on this? Al
Seems that windows 10 is unable to access the server or outlook. Sounds like a setup issue Al

I'd get a second opinion.
It certainly depends on what's getting quoted, but the price is very high.

Yes that was my thoughts. But has anyone tried going to a 2007 server and connecting a drive? Al

I was going to say it's several million people, all of whom had to futz with their SMB settings, but then I re-read the question. Your client may be the only one in the world with a copy of "Server 2007"
Perhaps a little more info would help...

2007? That must be one of those hooky far east copies Allen!!!
I can confirm 2003, 2008 and/or 2008R2 all connect no problem.
Never have seen the existence of 2007 server unless it is one of the Small Business System variants (of which there were many) which had their own non-standard naming nomenclature.

Thanks Dave, I guess it's 2008. Not had anything to do with windows servers since the 2003 one I just got rid of. Al

There's no such thing as Windows Server 2007.
If they mean Windows Server 2008 or 2008R2 then there is nothing stopping Windows 10 clients working with it per se. It would connect to anything down to Server 2000 probably, if you enable SMB 1.0 and CIFS support.
Thanks for that. I guess he is muddling office 2007. It must be 2008 server. Still there is no reason that win 10 cannot work with it as far as I can tell. I know win 10 love you to sign in with a Microsoft account and I do here, but there is an option to sign in as other accounts too. Al

They might be right if the client is on a volume licensing program. Some components for the activation of client PCs do not run on all versions of Windows Server. I don't know which versions are supported for the activation of Windows 10, but the minimum version is likely either Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2.
Also, some volume license programs have limited downgrade rights. So the company might need to move to the current version (or one or two behind) for compliance rather than technical reasons.
Thanks Christof It may be the case. First I need to check what server. It would explain why the bad take-up of windows 10 if it costs 120,000 AUD for a relatively small company. Al

We have plenty of companies on Server 2008 and earlier who are starting to introduce Windows 10 clients, either by upgrade or as old machines get replaced. It would be crazy for Microsoft to restrict it's rollout wholesale like this. If corporate uptake is slow it's because Windows 7 is still supported, updated and plenty good enough for many IT departments.
Ah ok so 2008 is not a problem with win 10? So it has to be setup of win 10? I see that there is, on the accounts setup, a choice of logging in as Microsoft account or other. I wonder if other will solve the problems. The problems being unable to connect to server drives and outlook to exchange server. Al

Allen, If the client is running a domain then the machines must be members of the domain to get full access rights to the server obviously.
If the Win 10 has been set up with a Microsoft account as login then this must be added into the domain as opposed to using the default machine name (or whatever they used on Windows 7). We discovered a similar problem when we had to default Win 8/8.1 login as it isn't or wasn't obvious then that you could use a non Microsoft login account!!!
The Microsoft seems to cause too many problems especially seeing as how we restrict all machines on internet access which the Microsoft login sometimes doesn't like. I guess it is all to do with the ET 'Phone Home' syndrome.

I did notice that accounts allows to sign in with a domain/username instead of the Microsoft account. I have already asked the user to change that and see if it works. Thanks Dave

The 'Pro' variety of Windows 10 should be the one used for connecting to Windows domains too.
Thanks Alan Yes I would not allow anything else on my machines. But good point in case they have standard on them. Al

Standard works but obviously doesn't activate any group policies or file security/access on a folder/file level and it will constantly requests access credentials even when you say remember the access credentials.
Not good unless you want to see everything on a remote server drive or have everyone with the same level of access to all data.

I have connected Windows 7/8/10 Desktops to Windows Server 2003/2008/2010/2012 without any issues. This has been done in early 2012.
