Hey there folks,
So, I know there is a Leafe mailing list for Python, as I just looked on the Leafe mailing lists website. But, sadly - unlike this one - it pretty much looks dead. Sad - since I was just beginning to get back into some Python programming again.
I did notice that even this forum has gotten to be VERY Quiet. Sad indeed!
Truthfully, I have not seriously done any FoxPro since like 2020, and even that was a Small personal project. Last serious work was in like Nov 2017. And, I know that FoxPro usage in general is dying off across the world...
Anyway - back to the topic at hand: Python.
In my case, I'm actually using the PySimpleGUI to build UI's. Its a project I'm coming back to, as it was mothballed about a year ago - due to a big round of layoffs at the 3D Printing co. where I was working. So - yeah, FYI - I'm back at that co. - they hired me back last year in Oct.! I'm pretty thrilled to be back - especially as it truly is my Dream Job!
Anyway - short synopsis of tool I am working on.
If someone is printing a REALLY Large print job - which can literally take like 5 days or more to run, problem is - if you get an error on the machine that can not be recovered from. It can be a pretty Epic fail - not only because all the lost hours, but, also costs of filament. For instance - a special filament like Ultem - can run a customer like $750 for 2.5Kg of the stuff. So, if a customer runs a big print job - and they are on the 2nd spool - and printer dies 1/2 way thru that spool - you have essentially thrown like $1100 Down the Toilet!
The tool I am creating will essentially take a massive GCode file, and based upon criteria - find out where it left off printing. Then, remove all the lines of code that have already been printed - but, making sure some of the GCode lines at the top, like print temperatures - are still included. Then, it will have proper lines to restart that print job.
Anyway - probably TMI in regards to this posting. But, if anyone could point me in the direction of a forum similar to this one - where I could get some help in Python programming - that would be Awesome!
Thanks, Kurt
Kurt
There's the official Python forums: https://python-forum.io/forum-8.html
Also StackOverflow if you can provide a code sample.
Thanks Alan - much appreciated! I may have to check them out at some point...

I set up the ProPython and ProLinux lists at a time when there was a lot of discussion about things on those topics on this list, and some members felt that that stuff didn't belong on a VFP list. But as you've noticed, there really isn't a need for those lists anymore, and since it takes me more effort to close them than to leave them running, they're still there.
But I still don't see anything wrong with asking Python questions here, as long as you add the [NF] in the subject, so that those members who only want VFP content can filter out such messages.

That sounds really interesting. If you can post a pic of something that takes 5 days to 3D print I'd love to see it.

Hey Eric,
I would love to do so. But, alas - the one customer I was referencing was a Military customer. So, needless to say - I can not share a pic of anything from them. But, that being said - I might be able to get a pic from a Co-worker in TX who prints REALLY BIG Things - and I might be able to grab up one of those pics to post!
I will keep you posted...

Hey there Ed,
Its nice to hear from you. Yeah - understood as to why you keep those forums running - takes less effort than to kill them off!
But, yes - got it. Will post questions here if need be - with the [NF] subject prefix - just to keep it Kosher!
Will say - its kinda fun to be getting back into the programming world a little. Python looks like it can be fun stuff. I've got several co-workers who have been dabbling in Python that past couple years. But, of course, should I really dig in - I could put them all to Shame! But, in a fun way - considering my extensive programming background.
Will also note...
Someone just posted on the 3D Printing forum, of which I am a member - some Python code to pause a print job. OF course, it was funny - since he posted the Actual code - giving it up for others to use. Not that its a bad thing. But, for folks that are Not programmers - and who have NOT setup a Python Dev environment, and don't know how to DL specific packages - its not an Easy thing. Best thing for the guy to do is also drop an EXE on the folks. Which I am about to suggest to the guy...

The only finicky thing I found with Python is how imports work, i.e. referencing other Python files or packages. It's very confusing when you're starting. As a language it's fantastic.
Visual Studio Code is free and has excellent built-in Python support, it will install everything you need and make things as easy as possible. Assuming you're in Windows land of course.

You don't have to be in Widows Land for Visual Studio Code. I also run it in Linux - 3 different distros, and they also have it for Mac: https://code.visualstudio.com/download

Indeed... Lots of folks at Microsoft aren't in Windows Land anymore. I'm running MS SQL server and Visual Studio on my Mac and Ubuntu on my Windows machine. Microsoft is a happy camper as long as we and our customers continue to pay for O365 and Azure.

Not funny at all. Sharing code is very commonplace in the world of free/open software.
I have a lot of my code on GitHub (https://github.com/EdLeafe), free for anyone to see and use/adapt. Why not?

No - Ed, you got me wrong!
I am NOT at ALL against sharing code and giving it away for free! But, he posted on a forum that is NOT Specific to programmers. And, for 3D Printing folks - if you don't already do programming - getting that code, by itself is no good! Since, not only do you normally have to have an IDE/Dev Env. to run the code - many times - you need extra packages. So - my point was - he should really share an EXE as opposed to just purely a python chunk of code - since, most in that forum may NOT know what to do with it!
I hope that makes more sense now...
