Anyway, thinking of having a look at this ever popular language again in my spare time. A question for the Python mavens on the list - better to start with 2.7 or 3.6 at this point?

As others have said, start with the latest. There are still some 3rd-party libraries that only work with 2.x, but those numbers are dwindling.
