Greetings fellow Profoxers!
I see some external SSD drives on this page: http://www.newegg.com/External-SSDs/SubCategory/ID-2022?Tid=11694
My laptop is a maybe 4 years old and is running out of local disk space. I've got another laptop I can migrate to but I was thinking of just extending and still using this one yet (because I love it) and using an external HD would take care of my space issues...at least for now...and give me another area to send backups.
My question: I know SSD drives are 20x faster reportedly, but would that still apply if it's an EXTERNAL drive? I understand that using the USB 3.0 port is better than the older USB 2.x ports and earlier for transfer rates.

SATA 3 HD interface is rated up to 6Gbps USB 3.0 interface is rated up to 5Gbps
Yes, using an SSD external will result in better performance than a non-SSD, even with USB 3.0 interface in the mix.

Remember not to plug in any USB 2.x devices into a shared USB 3.0 controller because all devices will then slow to the USB 2.x speed.
Example: If you plug in a mouse beside the SSD External HD, you've just slowed down the speed of the HD.

Good to know. Another reason to use the SATA connection instead of USB3 then?
Thanks!

Thanks, Mike. Sounds like an even better plan is to get the SATA 3 HD connection. I believe my laptop has that port too.
You'd be right, just fewer to choose from (containers to hold the SSD and provide the SATA3 HD interface.)

Mike - I upgraded my laptop with a smart hybrid drive - SSD for the OS and frequently accessed files, and extra space for the rest. Not as fast as a pure SSD but much cheaper and imho works well.

Personally I would just buy a replacement internal SSD and a large external HDD. Samsungs are nice.
Clonezilla can be used to transfer your OS to the new drive.

How long do you normally use a laptop hard drive before replacing it (before disaster strikes it)?
Mike, I always used to work on the basis of 3 years for conventional desktop drives but the laptop drives seem to be much better so, depending on usage, about 5 years I guess but after that time you would probably find it to be too small anyway.
Lots of manufacturers no longer state the MTBF for drives any more as I guess it is fairly meaningless to most people.

I don't think I've ever had a drive I personally own die. Still got a 9Gb SCSI drive running in my Amiga 4000 :-)
I've blown up a 300MB drive when installing it, back when that was a seriously big drive, but that's it.
Funnily enough, I still have a 20Mb ... yes 20Mb Seagate RLL drive running in a 286 with 128Kb (Kb NOT Mb) of memory running MsDos 3.0 and stacker software to make the 20Mb look like 40Mb!! All it does is simply routes comms packets from the Radio Amateur network onto my LAN. It has been turned on almost continuously since 1986 and never faltered apart from a couple of mains outages.

Chatting about old technology reminded me of the old days when we had to use TSR programs like Borland Sidekick to get around the 640Mb memory limit. Oh how times have changed!!

I've blown up a 300MB drive when installing it, back when that was a seriously big drive, but that's it.

My final year project from 1987 was on a 20mb drive attached to an Amstrad 1512 which now no longer works...
I'm looking to get it onto a pc to relive old times and to prove that i could write real code.....
Assembler / Debugger and emulator for the MS6502 written in Turbo Pascal....
It's on a 360KB disk though!

I do in fact Adam and it is only a single sided 160Kb one - not even double sided... Why, do you need one?

Interesting! I may still have an old floppy drive of that style as well. So - Dave - if your search fails - I may do a search for Adam!
I know - some of us computer geeks keep our old crap for YEARS! I still have an old DELL box, that has 2 300Mhz CPUS in it - and this was WAY Prior to Duo chips!

Well - Paul - aren't you the Lucky one! I've had like 2 or 3 die in my life time - which always sucks! Exactly HOW Old is that Amiga 4000? I'm bummed at times when I think about how I sold my Amiga 1000 about 2 years - back when I was REALLY Desperate financially... :-(

I'm not sure really. They were released 24 years ago, but I bought mine second hand 15-20 years ago. It's something I like playing around with in my spare time. Has an ethernet card so can I browse the web (badly).
My next project is to replace the SCSI HD with some kind of SSD solution.
I own 2 A4000s. The more basic one has a eSATA SSD to IDE adapter which is pretty cool. A serial connection to a Raspberry PI provides internet access.
Considering Commodore was a US company it's a shame the Amiga didn't do well there. Your A1000 would have made good money in Europe. Up to $1000 I guess.

There's a long story there. I worked part-time as a retail clerk in a Commodore-only shop during the early Amiga boom. It was an amazing machine in its time with unprecedented multimedia capabilities, pre-emptive multitasking and a remarkable 3rd-party market of software and hardware.

Well I always heard that the SCSI drives lasted the longest (as opposed to the IDE drives)! They say these SSD drives are super fast (yes!) but they don't have the longevity like your SCSI either though...supposedly.
I guess I am missing something here. Why wouldn't SSDs last longer than disk drives, since they are solid state? Also, my understanding is that they use leveling algorithms to avoid the problem of wearing out due to multiple writes to the same addresses.

About SSDs vs SCSI: comparing the same amount on data write and read, SSDs should be far longer, depending on the quality of the drive.

The jury is still out, for me, but I agree with your understanding and so far SSDs have been more reliable.
