Hi Ted et al I tried everything there without success. I'm at the stage where the desktop is showing no computers on the network (not even itself) and the laptop is showing all the computers and a networked printer, but only if SMB1 is enabled (which, after Alan's warning, I don't want to do). Would I be right in thinking that I could solve everything by upgrading to Windows 10 Professional?

Don't enable SMB1 support. You might as well leave your front door open when you leave the house.
