I've been running 32 bit servers within a Ubuntu 64 bit machine and been pleasantly surprised at performance.

Yes it will work, you can install anything in a VM. It will likely be a slow as molasses. The minimum RAM requirement will be 2GB so I wouldn't even bother on a machine with less than 8GB.
