My first thought was to suggest using Oracle Virtual box to create a windows 98 or even a DOS virtual machine and run your application within the virtual machine. If your app will run in WinXP then you can create a virtual XP box and then use "net use" to capture your LPT1 port and map via the network to a usb device. You may have to use PrintFil to capture the port on the Windows98 virtual box to redirect the printer output.
I've had great luck keeping a couple of old btrieve database programs (MagicPC for those who might be interested) running on current machines doing similar installations.
Not pretty, but pretty cheap. And it works.
