Shouldn't this be a decision for the employer's sysadmin?
As is nearly always the case in ProFox, we haven't enough data to go on, and have to project some guesses as to the situation.
So, "small business" might mean a single-person and/or single computer. The owner's work computer needs to be accessed remotely from the owner's home computer.
If so, the firewall is likely to be a flimsy thing built into the business's cable router
However it's done it will have to get through the corporate firewall.
Given that, an SSH tunnel is not that difficult to set up, it can even be done fro/m /the employer side to 'home' and reverse tunnel back in. (shhh!)
Certainly my preferred solution, In several small biz I work with (3-6 people), the data and my app end up on a Linux box in their office that provides them with Samba and Apache intranet and other useful functions, as well as proving a robust ssh server inside their network that can send log files and let me know when their external IP address changes. A small workgroup server is a fairly inexpensive capital outlay for most businesses.
