I'm just now following up on this e-mail thread. I used Camtasia in the past - I think I only used a demo version at the time. But, was thrilled when someone turned me on to CamStudio. It did seem very similar to Camtasia - but, its open-source and thus free. So - I suggest Mike that you check it out. And, yeah - Man-wai, you beat me to the punchline on this one - but, I'm glad you posted about it!

CamStudio is freeware, but might not have all those fancy functions.
