Your friend is wise to consider alternatives. If we didn't, we'd all be hand-coding screens and reports. Some people still do.
But "he" also said he was considering switching because he felt like he was always coming to a conversation after the fact, kinda like watching DVR'd copies of season finale shows after the new TV season
starts.
As a guy who just saw the last Harry Potter, and learned 5 years late who killed Laura Palmer, I can relate to this.
As you can tell, "my friend" is very creative with his metaphors, mixed or otherwise.
