I've never tried this on a production server. Will it work? Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of?
Yes it will work, you can install anything in a VM. It will likely be a slow as molasses. The minimum RAM requirement will be 2GB so I wouldn't even bother on a machine with less than 8GB.
