T'was the night before crisis...

First posted here in 2006, and I've only missed an eve or two since, so ... Twas the night before crisis, and all through the house, Not a program was working, not even a browse. The programmers were wrung out, too mindless to care, Knowing chances of shipping hadn't a prayer. The users were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of inquiries danced in their heads. When out in the lobby there arose such a clatter, That I sprang from my cube to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a SUPER PROGRAMMER, oblivious to fear. More rapid than eagles, his programs they came, And he whistled and shouted and called them by name: On Update! On Add! On Inquiry! On Delete! On Batch Jobs! On Closing! On Functions Complete! His eyes were glazed over, his fingers were lean, >From weekends and nights in front of the screen. A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, Turning specs into code, then he turned with a jerk. And laying his finger on the ENTER key, The system came up, and worked perfectly. The updates, updated; the deletes, they deleted; The inquiries, inquired; and the closing completed. He tested each whistle, he tested each bell, With nary an abend, and all had gone well. The system was finished, the tests were concluded, The client's last changes were even included! Database Migration Pointers

Hi All Before we start this just figured it would make sense to reach out to you guys for any general advice or pointers you can give. We have a typical multiuser VFP application using a DBC with DBF’s and local views. The forms that interact with this data all have a DE and for the deployed versions we have DPATHMGR sorting the DE paths out making everything work. We have no immediate need to change anything about from front end , it’s relatively straight forward and most of the code is based around TABLEUPDATE and TABLEREVERT. Our mission is just to loose the DBFs and move the data to SQL as our first pass. No intentions to make use of SQL things like stored procedures , we just want to treat it as a data dump for the moment. So after using VFPX/UpsizingWizard our initial thoughts are to replace the local view with remote views and then continue with the current method of CRUD via the views. Anything you feel is worth a heads up on for us to consider before we get on with it? Regards Chris

visual foxpro 5 and paths

I've been asked to help document business logic in an old (even for Visual Foxpro) app. It appears that it was built using Codemine and VFP5. I've worked with Foxpro on and off almost all my life, but with the exception of an old VFP6 that I do very little ongoing maintenance on, my Foxpro is getting pretty rusty! I think they have all the source files, including Codemine, but it seems to be looking for classes and other files that shipped with VFP5, and it doesn't see the Codemine files. I plan to either try to locate a full copy of VFP5 or try to get it to work with my existing copy of VFP9, then try to add the places it may need to look for things into the path. Am I missing anything? Is it worth tracking down a copy of VFP5 or do you guys think it will find the updated components in a VFP9 install?
