Ok, a few considerations on new tech and people pushing it. 1. Is it going to make your company perform better? 2. Is it going to make for better suited software? 3. Is it radically going to change how the company does its business? 4. Is the cost of development, training, hardware, implementation too big for the company to absorb? 5. Is the new tech reliable to deliver on the promises of said technology? 6. A cloud melts during the storm and leaves a mess behind... and it does not belong to you, you don't get to decide how or when that will happen. Let it sync in... My perspective: A lot of new tech are being created more for obsolescence purpose than to improve technology.New languages do not gain a lot of ground on merit alone. It's usually pushed by a series of factors. Merit has little to do with it.So don't feel bad if you don't know the new acronyms. If you decide to recycle your knowledge, then you'll find out what those are.Just one suggestion, though. Look for something that is independent of Microsoft. That can run on Windows, but it can't be killed when MS decide it's time to make developers pain again for the same old crap under a new and improved marketing fueled brand new name, such as Visual Studio 10^3 - you still need hundreds of addons to do the same thing VFP did 10 years ago by itself. It may not be as pretty, but there are connections that you can make with devices and resources that make it much more efficient in the work place. This is a VFP application, generating web interfaces. With that platform (and a little magic dust) we can get values from electronic devices and local databases, without the interface requiring any custom code at all. The beauty of the Fox is that it can be enhanced. I have been working with it for somewhere around 20 years now. I recall back in the late 90s or early 2000s people poo-pooing the VFP installations that had to carry the 15 megabyte runtimes also besides the program/application EXE itself. LOL

A trusted application

The challenge is to make an application that cannot be changed. It doesn't matter if it is copied, but it does matter if the application is changed. The application will always have an internet connection. The point is that the messages coming from the application to the server must be "trusted" that the contents are the original contents. So I was wondering if this workflow might do it, or if there is a simpler method. - On startup connect to the server and pass the build version number - The server verifies the build # and responds with a script and a unique id built from the server date time and version. - The script is Javascript that changes everyday with an output code. - The client runs the script which builds a hash from all the files in the application directory. - The script then takes the unique id, the hash, the output code and sends it back to the server as signature stored in the HTTP session - The server verifies that the response is within an acceptable response period by looking at the unique id. - The server verifies the hash against the hash for that version. - The signature is stored for the session and all messages within a session must have a matching signature or the request is rejected and the verification process is repeated. It would seem the weak point would be if someone analyzed the network traffic and then built a proxy to run the script and spoof the session, but it would be difficult because the session script could easily change the way it verifies the running environment. Another weak point might be if the network traffic was sniffed and a rogue application started using the signature. However that would involve a new HTTP session and so the verification would fail. SMS (text messaging)

Anybody done a simple app that sends text messages to customers? I'm talking a simple database with name, phone number, email, and you send a specific message to the list. Example: you want to alert customers scheduled to come in to your business that it's closed (let's say due to avalanche). I have notes from YEARS ago where it was something like phonenumber(a)txt.att.net.
