Google API for Geocoding ... Again

Fellow Gentlemen, I posted a request about doing geocoding requests to receive back a Lat/Long dataset for various addresses a few weeks ago and now find that Google do in fact provide a Geocoding service: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/geocoding/start The responses back from the requests are all JSON from a Java Script API run by Google. I have looked over Rick's Westwind site to try and get a start on using this method to get back a JSON response but seem to be getting nowhere fast. Anyone got any ideas on a simple & neat way of retrieving this data back using VFP programmatically? Either that or anyone know a free Geocoding site that would handle up to 100 name and address calls per day ideally by sending a text file and receiving one back which could be automated from the VFP end. Never even looked at Web services in anger before so it all seems a little baffling and terribly long winded at the moment unless I am missing something obvious. Note I don't want to have to drop into an intermediate program/language to accomplish this, if possible. Dave

VFP EXE and RDS random crashes

Throwing this out to the collective wisdom. I've recently rolled out a hosted environment for my application. So I'm in the cloud... I've been observing random hard application errors, particularly around running reports. Of course, it's not consistent. A user will be able to run a report with no errors just fine one time and then other times the same report will just result in an application crash. What I'm seeing in the Windows application log when this happens are mainly C6 errors. The Google gave me some recommendations about setting the EXE and the runtime DLLs read-only but I'm hoping that out there in Profox land this might ring some bells. Just a reminder - STRTOFILE and FILETOSTR are limited by the size of a memory variable - 16,384K bytes (16,777.184 bytes). VF9SP2 Currently, I'm simply doing this for now: RowCount = OCCURS(CHR(13),FILETOSTR(m.Filename)) Is there a better (read: FASTER) way? These are tab delimited text files so I can't really use FSEEK or FSIZE(m.Filename) (which requires SET COMPATIBLE ON) because I can't be sure of each record's length. tia, --Mike

Excel automation to get the SUM("R:R")

Excel 2013, VFP9SP2 Range Object model: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff838238.aspx I've got my handy "Microsoft Office Automation With Visual Foxpro" book out from HWP, trying to see where I can get the value of a range. In this case, when I just select the entire column, Excel tells me the SUM of all of the values in the column at the bottom. I need that number. I don't want to do some sort of loop; rather, I want to basically say from VFP: 'return the SUM("R:R").' I've looked at the object model above and there doesn't appear to be a .Sum to tag onto the end of the Range object (like you might think of with DotNet stuff). Also, I don't want to create a formula in some other remote cell and then read that, although that's my Plan B for now. Ideas? tia! --Mike

Reading & Extracting Data From PDF Files

A couple of times I've heard people mention reading in PDF files using FileToStr and I want to know more about reading and extracting data from PDF files. I do a lot of data conversion and interface work with lots of file formats, but I've not been very successful at importing and extracting data from PDF reports. Obviously a scanned image saved as a PDF would have to be ocr'd first, but is there is a reliable way to extract data from PDF reports and if so, how? I'm sure I don't know all the ends and outs of the PDF format, but when I try, I seem to get a strange mix of formatting details and data combined in a random way. Am I being thick here or is there really a way that I can get any PDF file from any client and then successfully extract the data elements from that format? is there a proper way in FPW 2.6 to add a line to the end of a memo?

is there a recommended way in FPW 2.6 to add a line to the end of a memo field? I have been using : replace memo_field with memo_field + new_line and every once in a while the FPT file blows up to a large size (2 or 3 times normal size). I'm guessing it blows up because someone uses a utility to add a line to a large number of records at once.
